The Renewable Ride

On Sunday 2nd March 2025, our Finance Manager, Joey Hills, took on the daunting challenge of cycling the entire length of the Isle of Man, starting at the Point of Ayre, and finishing at the Sound Café. But that’s not all. The entirety of this cycle was completed with our product, Spinergy, attached to the bicycle, converting Joey’s pedal power, into useful electricity which was stored in a portable charger.
The day started at 10am on Sunday, where Joey met with Zac, Charlotte, and a couple of spectators, keen to watch him set off on his ride. Despite starting at 10:26am, which was a little later than we had intended, we determined us ready to set off. Throughout the day, Charlotte and Zac followed Joey along to ensure that he was staying safe, whilst also getting some pictures and videos to share the experience with our social media followers. Within the first 40 minutes of the ride, Joey had already cycled through Bride and down to lower Andreas. With this sort of pace, it was looking as though Joey could possibly finish the cycle in 3 hours, which was way earlier than anticipated. Luckily for us, though maybe unluckily for Joey, we were yet to reach the hills.
These hills knocked a good amount of time off of his predicted arrival, which meant that we were feeling a lot better about our estimated time. Regardless, he still put in a shift and kept a consistent pace through out. We did a total of 3 pit stops, to make sure our product was connected properly and working as it should, and also to give Joey a chance to have a quick break for water and to stretch before heading back on the roads.
According to Joey, the main challenge of the cycle was towards the end, on his way through Castletown up to Cregneash. The steepest hill by far of the cycle, after such a long time of cycling leading up to it, with thin roads and watching cars fly past when over-taking him. But he knew that, once he got through the worst of the hill, it was all downhill to the finish line. He reached the Sound Café at 1:58pm on the Sunday, recording a total cycling time of 3 hours and 42 minutes.
The research we gained from this cycle was more than we could have ever hoped for, and we are excited to share a little project that we have been inspired to create surrounding the cycle very soon. For now, we thank all spectators that came to support Joey as he crossed the finish line, and now have our sights on the Company Programme competition day on Wednesday 12th March.
